Questions and Answers
  1. Is Personal Alert a big company.
  2. Yes and no, over the last 26 years we have installed thousands of systems, but unlike our competition we don't claim to have hundreds of thousand of accounts. With larger companies you tend to become nothing more then a account number. Personal Alert is large enough to provide you with the best possible service and small enough to care about individual clients.

  1. Is it bad to have the monitoring station so far away.
  2. No. Most monitoring offices are located in major cities where the equipment, technology and personel are available to keep everything running smooth. Even if there was a major disaster, most larger companies have backup monitoring stations providing you with continued coverage. Most smaller local companies cannot provide this kind of service.

  1. Would a local company be better?
  2. Very few people can find a company that installs and monitors locally unless you live in a major city. Most companies that seem local are just local representatives that provide installation and their monitoring station can still be hundreds to thousands of miles away.

  1. Is it difficult to install?
  2. No. It plugs into an electrical outlet and a phone jack. Your existing phone will plug into the back of the machine, although no phone is required. If technical assistance is needed our installation staff is always available.

  1. Do I need telephone service in order for it to work?
  2. Yes.

  1. Is the pendant waterproof?
  2. Yes. It should be worn in the shower or bath because this is where most falls occur.

  1. What happens if I can't talk and I need help?
  2. By pressing your pendant a operator will attempt to talk to you. If the monitoring station does not receive a answer they will automatically dispatch help.

  1. Do I have to be in the same room as the base unit?
  2. No. The pendant will typically activate the base unit from anywhere in your home or yard.
  3. What happens if I lose electricity?
  4. The system will automatically switch over to a internal battery which will maintain the system for about a day. Once power is restored the battery will recharge.

  1. How can help get in if my door is locked?
  2. We recommed you purchase a key lock box from your local hardware store. Personal Alert would provide emergency response crews the combination to the lock box if needed.

  1. What do I do if I move?
  2. The system can be taken any place in the continental US. Notify us before plugging the system back in to your new location so we can update your records.

  1. How do I test the system and how often?
  2. The system should be tested a minimum of once a month and anytime after work has been done on your phone line or a new device has been added to your phone. To test the system you simply push your personal pendant. When the operator comes on let them know you are testing your system.

  1. Is there a contract or long-term agreement required?
  2. There are no contracts. There is a rental agreement which is on a month-to-month basis.

  1. Are there any early cancelation fees?
  2. No! There are no fees when you cancel, but monitoring is month-to-month. We do not pro-rate if you cancel in the middle of the month. Any amounts paid in advance would be refunded plus your deposit when your equipment is returned per the agreement.

  1. Does Personal Alert install burglar alarm systems?
  2. No! Since 1980 Personal Alert has only installed medical alarms. Though many burglar alarm companies install medical alarms as extra income, Personal Alert has decided that the monitoring of medical and burglar alarms are so different that we specialize in medical alarms only.
